Rankings and Reviews Methodology

How Dubai Times selects, evaluates and updates reviews, comparisons and rankings, including data sources, editorial criteria and commercial safeguards.

Rankings and Reviews Methodology

Dubai Times publishes editorial reviews, comparisons, recommendations and rankings relevant to Dubai.

This methodology explains how subjects may be selected, what evidence may be used, how criteria are applied, how editorial judgement differs from objective data and how commercial relationships are kept separate from ranking positions.

Purpose of Reviews and Rankings

Reviews and rankings should help readers understand meaningful differences between options rather than exist solely to create an ordered list.

A useful comparison should identify:

  • what is being compared;
  • who the comparison may be useful for;
  • which criteria matter;
  • what evidence is available;
  • what limitations readers should understand.

Subjects We May Evaluate

  • hotels and hospitality;
  • restaurants and dining;
  • visitor attractions and experiences;
  • travel and aviation-related services;
  • Dubai neighbourhoods and communities;
  • property developments;
  • property-related comparisons;
  • consumer services;
  • business and professional services where appropriate;
  • education-related comparisons where reliable information exists;
  • data-based Dubai rankings;
  • other products or services relevant to Dubai readers where a useful methodology can be established.

Selection of Items

Not every ranking or review can include every available option.

Items may be selected based on factors such as:

  • relevance to the stated comparison;
  • availability in Dubai;
  • availability of reliable information;
  • market or reader relevance;
  • comparability with other options;
  • regulatory or operational status;
  • editorial usefulness.

Selection for a ranking does not automatically imply endorsement.

Evidence and Data Sources

Depending on the subject, Dubai Times may use:

  • Dubai and UAE government sources;
  • regulators and public authorities;
  • official datasets and public records;
  • official company and organisation information;
  • regulatory filings where relevant;
  • official product or service documentation;
  • published pricing and fee information;
  • property transaction and regulatory data;
  • airlines, airports, hotels, event organisers and responsible operators;
  • recognised research institutions;
  • industry reports;
  • qualified or knowledgeable expert commentary;
  • original editorial research;
  • reputable media and specialist publications as secondary or contextual sources;
  • user reviews as contextual information where appropriate.

Use of User Reviews

User reviews from third-party platforms may provide useful context about common experiences or recurring issues.

They should not automatically be treated as independently verified factual evidence.

A small number of individual reviews should not be presented as representative of every customer's experience.

Evaluation Criteria

Relevance
How well the option fits the stated purpose of the comparison and the likely needs of Dubai Times readers.
Transparency
Availability of meaningful information about pricing, terms, status, ownership, conditions or service details.
Pricing and Value
Published prices, fees, included services, exclusions and material additional costs where relevant.
Features and Services
Documented characteristics that materially distinguish one option from another.
Availability
Whether the product, service, route, venue or development is actually available to the relevant audience.
Location and Access
Geographic location, transport, infrastructure, access, parking or mobility considerations where relevant.
Safety and Compliance
Regulatory status, licensing, official requirements or other compliance considerations where relevant and verifiable.
User Experience
Practical usability, booking, access, service delivery or other reader-facing considerations where reliable information exists.
Reputation and Track Record
Documented operating history, regulatory information or established market presence where appropriate.
Data Quality
Completeness, comparability, source quality and recency of the information used.

Objective Data and Editorial Judgement

Not every ranking can be produced from a single objective dataset.

Dubai Times should distinguish between:

  • objective or measurable information;
  • editorial interpretation;
  • subjective assessment;
  • company claims;
  • user opinion;
  • forecasts or projections.

Where ordering depends significantly on editorial judgement, that should not be presented as though it were a purely mathematical fact.

Numerical Scoring

Not all Dubai Times rankings use numerical scoring.

Where numerical scoring is used, the specific comparison should explain the relevant scale, factors and weighting where practical.

Weights may differ between subjects because criteria that matter for a hotel comparison may not be appropriate for a property, financial-service or neighbourhood comparison.

Rankings Without Numerical Scores

Where no numerical score is used, ordering reflects editorial assessment against the criteria disclosed for that specific comparison.

The article should provide enough context for readers to understand why one option may have been placed above another.

Pricing and Availability

Prices, fees, inventory and availability may change after publication.

Where price materially affects a ranking, Dubai Times should use the most appropriate reliable information reasonably available at the time of review.

Readers should verify current prices and terms directly with the responsible provider before making a consequential purchase or financial decision.

Property and Neighbourhood Rankings

Property and neighbourhood comparisons may consider factors such as:

  • location;
  • transport and connectivity;
  • transaction or rental data where available;
  • property types;
  • community facilities;
  • project status;
  • service charges or costs where reliable data exists;
  • access to schools, workplaces or public services;
  • other criteria relevant to the stated comparison.

Historical market performance does not guarantee future property values or investment outcomes.

Travel, Hotels and Hospitality

Travel and hospitality comparisons may consider location, access, official category or service information, facilities, pricing, practical convenience and other relevant criteria.

Hotel prices, availability, policies and services can change and should be verified before booking.

Financial and Other Higher-Impact Comparisons

Financial, property, education, health-related and other consequential rankings require additional caution.

A general ranking cannot account for every reader's individual circumstances, eligibility, financial position or professional needs.

Dubai Times content is informational and does not constitute personalised medical, legal, financial, tax, investment or other professional advice.

Commercial Independence

Paid visibility does not determine editorial ranking position.

Dubai Times does not currently sell paid ranking positions, paid positive reviews, premium profiles that alter editorial conclusions or affiliate ranking placements.

Google AdSense advertisements may appear on ranking or review pages, but advertising does not determine editorial selection, ordering or conclusions.

Sponsored Content and Affiliate Links

Dubai Times does not currently publish sponsored editorial content and does not currently use affiliate links.

Updates

Rankings and reviews may be updated when:

  • prices change;
  • services change;
  • availability changes;
  • new official data becomes available;
  • regulatory status changes;
  • a business or project opens, closes or changes status;
  • a material factual error is identified;
  • the comparison methodology is materially revised.

Corrections

If a factual error affects a review or ranking, Dubai Times may correct the underlying information and reassess the result.

Possible factual errors can be reported to corrections@dubaitimes.org.

Methodology Changes

A methodology may evolve when better data becomes available or when the nature of the market or comparison changes.

Material changes should not be presented as though the old and new methods were necessarily identical.

Limitations

No ranking can include every possible option or perfectly reflect every reader's preferences.

Data may also have limitations relating to timing, availability, definitions or comparability.

Readers should consider the underlying criteria and their own circumstances rather than relying solely on an item's numerical or editorial position.
