AI Use Policy
Dubai Times' rules for AI: permitted use is limited to creating, preparing or editing images and visual materials, while editorial text and verification remain human-led.
AI Use Policy
This policy explains how Dubai Times uses artificial intelligence and the boundaries that apply to AI-assisted or AI-generated material.
AI use is limited to creating, preparing or editing images and other visual materials. Editorial text, research, verification and publishing decisions remain human responsibilities.
Current AI Use
Human Editorial Responsibility
Human editorial responsibility remains with Dubai Times.
AI is not treated as:
- an author;
- an editor of record;
- a qualified expert;
- a medical, legal or financial reviewer;
- an authoritative factual source;
- a substitute for source verification.
Where AI-generated or AI-edited visuals are used, the decision to publish remains a human editorial responsibility.
AI-Generated and AI-Edited Visuals
Dubai Times may use AI to create, prepare or edit imagery and other visual materials.
Such visuals must not be presented in a way that falsely suggests they are authentic documentary photographs of real events when they are not.
AI-generated or materially altered imagery must not fabricate visual evidence or materially mislead readers about what actually happened.
Real People and Real Events
AI-generated or AI-edited visuals should not falsely depict a real person participating in an event, action or situation that did not occur.
Particular care is required where a synthetic or altered image could reasonably be interpreted as evidence concerning:
- a real public event;
- a crime or allegation;
- a medical condition;
- an accident or safety incident;
- a legal proceeding;
- a government action;
- a company event;
- a person's conduct or reputation.
Disclosure of Synthetic Visuals
Where the synthetic or materially altered nature of an image is important to reader understanding, an appropriate disclosure should be used.
Examples may include:
- AI-generated illustration;
- AI-generated image;
- Illustrative image prepared with AI;
- Synthetic illustration - not a documentary photograph.
What AI Must Not Fabricate
- sources;
- quotations;
- names;
- people;
- events;
- companies or organisations;
- official statements;
- legal requirements;
- medical information;
- financial figures;
- qualifications;
- professional credentials;
- awards;
- licences;
- external profiles.
Sources and Verification
AI is not used for research or fact-checking and does not replace source verification.
Material factual claims are checked using appropriate sources under the Dubai Times Fact-Checking Policy.
Primary and authoritative sources are preferred where appropriate.
AI and Higher-Risk Topics
Dubai Times covers subjects such as finance, property, residency, immigration, healthcare, law and safety.
AI-generated or AI-edited visuals do not replace the source verification and editorial safeguards required for those subjects.
AI and Corrections
If an AI-generated or AI-edited visual creates a materially misleading impression or contains a factual or representational problem, Dubai Times may replace, remove, clarify or label the visual as appropriate.
Readers can report concerns through corrections@dubaitimes.org or editorial@dubaitimes.org.
Authorship
AI is not presented as the author of Dubai Times journalism.
Author bylines identify the human author or other legitimate editorial attribution used by the publication.
Changes in AI Use
If Dubai Times changes how AI is used, this policy will be updated to reflect the actual editorial workflow and any additional safeguards or disclosures.
